French

Our MFL Vision

“Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.”

Rita Mae Brown

We believe that having the opportunity to learn a foreign language is a privilege and provides us with a window into other cultures.  At Manor Park CE First School, we teach the KS2 children French and in doing so, intend to stimulate their curiosity about the world and develop their understanding of countries and cultures outside of their own.

We teach the children to read, write and speak in French but with the aim of giving them the tools to communicate creatively, whether this is through speaking or the written word, rather than helping them to just learn an endless list of vocabulary.  We want our children to be able to express their thoughts and ideas in French and to be able to listen and respond to other French speakers.  We want their language learning to be useful to them if they should visit a French-speaking country and therefore teach them language that allows them to communicate for practical purposes.

We also aim to instil a passion for languages and a strong awareness of the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
