Our History Vision

At Manor Park CE First School, we want all children to experience and develop the integral skills to become confident, creative and independent historians. We aim for children to gain excellent knowledge and understanding of people, events and contexts from a range of historical periods of both Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We will examine the children’s own personal history and develop their sense of chronology throughout the study of topics. Children will have the opportunity to think critically about how events in the past have influenced our lives today. Through investigating past historical periods children will be encouraged to support, evaluate and challenge their own views and the views of others. From such discussions and reflections, children will be able to formulate and refine questions and lines of enquiry so that they can communicate confidently to a range of audiences. We promote more enthusiastic engagement in learning by exploring events through a variety of sources and artefacts to support their explanations and judgements. We aim to create a desire to embrace challenging activities and include opportunities to undertake high-quality research about the life of people who lived in the past. This will help children develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage across a range of history topics which can then be applied to other subjects.

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” – Marcus Garvey
